Let me just sing you one of my favorite Christmas Carols....
Christmas is coming,
The Goose is getting FAT!
Please, put a penny in the old man's hat.
If you haven't got a penny,
Then an Ha'penny will do.
If you haven't got a ha'penny then
GOD BLESS YOU!!!
I love this song for a couple of reasons. The first one is it was always fun to sing, whether with my parents or in Madrigals. It just makes me smile, I always picture Victorian Peddlers standing in the market, selling their wares. Fattened Geese hanging from stalls, and the Lady of the house shopping for the perfect Goose. A small child standing at the corner, holding a cup and singing this song in their beautiful voice, which brings me to the other reason I love this song.
It's about charity. Plan and simple charity. It gently, but bluntly put's out there what that child would have been saying. Hey look, your goose is fattened....I have nothing...could you please help...The person isn't asking much, just a penny...okay....ha'penny. Do you realize how little a half penny is? But then this child says, if you don't have that either that's okay, God Blesses you>
I mean how many of us could say today that you pay attention to the poverty around you. And if you are in that poverty how easy is it to Bless those who don't take the time to give even a little. Blessing someone truly in God's name is one of the most Generous things you can do. When you are upset with someone, for any reason, stop, think of your blessings, be them many or few. Then pass them on, bless those who have blessed you. Bless those who curse you. It is amazing what rewards you will reap.
Anyways, there's the start to my holiday ramblings.
May your Holidays be full of Grace and Blessings.
Canaan
